 ROSS STEELE AWARDED OFFICIER IN THE FRENCH LEGION OF HONOUR- By decree of the President of the French Republic, Monsieur Nicolas
Sarkozy, on 3 December 2008, Ross Steele was promoted from Chevalier to
Officier in the National Order of the Légion d’Honneur. The investiture
conducted by the French Ambassador, Monsieur Michel Filhol, took place at
a Reception at the Ambassador's Residence in Canberra on 12 March 2009.
Among the distinguished guests was General Alain Picard, Administrator of
overseas branches of the Société d'Entr'aide des Membres de la Légion d’Honneur whose headquarters are at Les Invalides in Paris. Addressing
Ross, before pinning the medal of Officier on his lapel, the Ambassador
said: "Vous êtes à la fois, Monsieur le Professeur, une personnalité de
réflexion, d'action et de distinction. Ces qualités sont celles de
l'honnête homme des Lumières. Celles de la France."
